The Avalon Lounge & Game Cafe is an independent restaurant, bar, and game store in Holyoke, MA. Prep Cook / Dishwasher

This is a part time position that will work closely with the Executive Chef.  Duties include dishwashing, light maintenance, cleaning and prepwork.

Hours: full time / part time (multiple positions open) – evening and weekend availability required.

Compensation: Hourly, $14.00/hr + Tips. All hourly staff, both front of house & back of house, share tips.

Typical Daily Duties:

  • Provision of clean dishes to the kitchen during service as needed, providing clean glassware to the bar as needed.
  • Cleaning occasional mishaps in the front of house as needed
  • Sweeping and mopping of all common areas and bathrooms.
  • Light janitorial duties including cleaning of bathrooms, sweeping, mopping, removal of all trash and replacement of bags.
  • Stocking of soap, paper towels and toilet paper in bathrooms before opening.  
  • Light prep work as needed.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing of all dishes, cookware, flatware and glasses, keeping the dish room organized to accepted standard.
  • Wash, peel, and cut various foods, such as fruits and vegetables, to prepare for cooking or serving.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Skills Required:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Serv Safe certification or equivalent. 
  • Punctuality, detail oriented nature, and time management skills are all important.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and guidelines.
  • Strong ability to improvise, problem solve, and have good judgement.

Line Cook

This is a part time position that will work closely with the Executive Chef.  They will prepare food orders from tickets and run the food line. They might have additional duties such as prep work, cleaning, and designing recipes.

Hours: [full time] – evening and weekend availability required

Compensation: Hourly, $15.00 + Tips, Tip Pooling.

Typical Daily Duties:

  • Read and follow recipes
  • Read and follow safety instructions, and use safety equipment
  • Measure or weigh ingredients for food preparation
  • Use commercial ovens, stoves, mixers, knives, and other equipment
  • Check the quality of raw materials to ensure that standards and specifications are met.
  • Adapt the quantity of ingredients to match the amount of items to be cooked.
  • Portion, arrange, and garnish food, and serve food to waiters or patrons.
  • Substitute for or assist other cooks during emergencies or rush periods.
  • Bake, roast, broil, and steam meats, fish, vegetables, and other foods.
  • Wash, peel, cut, and seed fruits and vegetables to prepare them for consumption.
  • Carve and trim meats for hot or cold service, or for sandwiches.
  • Direct or coordinate food deliveries.
  • Order or receive supplies or equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum 6 months experience in fast-paced, table-service restaurant kitchen

Host / Runner / Cashier

This is a part time position that will work closely with the General Manager.  Main duties include seating guests, explaining the game library & system, selling games in the retail section.  They might have additional duties such as running food and drinks to tables and bussing tables. 

Hours: part time – evening and weekend availability required

Compensation: Hourly, $13.00 + Tips. 

Typical Daily Duties:

  • Provide guests with menus, greet guests, and seat them at tables suitable for their needs and according to rotation so that servers receive an appropriate number of seatings.
  • Receive and record patrons’ dining reservations.
  • Maintain contact with kitchen staff, management, serving staff, and customers to ensure that dining details are handled properly and customers concerns are addressed.
  • Inform patrons of establishment specialties and features, including the game library.
  • Inspect dining and serving areas to ensure cleanliness and proper setup.
  • Inspect restrooms for cleanliness and availability of supplies and clean restrooms when necessary.
  • Establish or identify prices of retail goods, services or admission, and tabulate bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners.
  • Sell game retail products, event tickets, and other items to customers.
  • Process merchandise returns and exchanges.
  • Stock shelves, and mark prices on shelves and items.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Skills Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bilingual – Spanish & English speaking strongly preferred.
  • Enthusiasm or interest in tabletop games.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in fast-paced, table-service dining preferred
  • Must be of legal age to serve alcoholic beverages
  • Punctuality, detail oriented nature, and time management skills are all important.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong ability to improvise, problem solve, and have good judgement.
  • Professional and positive manner when working with customers and staff.

Server

This is a part time position that will work closely with the General Manager.  They will seat guests, take orders and serve food and drinks, and recommend board games.  They may have additional duties such as busing tables, washing dishes, mixing drinks, or running game events.  

Hours: Part Time – evening and weekend availability required

Compensation: Hourly, $10.00 + Tips, Tip Pooling. Minimum guaranteed shift wage is $15/hour.

Typical Daily Duties:

  • Restaurant multi-tasking: tracking customers’ needs and demands; juggling multiple tables; organizing guest checks; interacting with varied staff – cooks, bussers, runners and hosts
  • Stand and walk for up to 10 hours per day
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Perform basic mental mathematical calculations
  • Recommend and explain board games from the library
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Skills Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bilingual – Spanish & English speaking preferred. 
  • Enthusiasm or interest in board games and RPGs.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in fast-paced, table-service dining preferred
  • Must be of legal age to serve alcoholic beverages
  • Some experience with a computerized Point of Sale preferred

Bartender

This is a part-time position that will work closely with the General Manager.  They will be responsible for the preparation and service of all manner of beverages for bar and table patrons; as well as food service to bar area patrons. They will be required to maintain a controlled and friendly atmosphere, facilitating a positive experience for patrons.  They will also be responsible for monitoring patrons alcohol intake to prevent over service, and to make sure alcoholic beverages aren’t served to minors They might have additional duties such as cleaning and light maintenance of the bar, equipment and bar area, assistance in inventory and bottle counts, facilitation/assistance in various games that may be played in the bar area.  If no server is on, they may be required to serve tables in the service area.

Hours: part time – evening and weekend availability required

Compensation: Hourly, $10.00 + Tips, Tip Pooling. 

Typical Daily Duties:

  • Check identification of customers to verify age requirements for purchase of alcohol.
  • Collect money for drinks served. Balance cash receipts.
  • Recommend games to patrons, and engage in discussions about board games, RPGs, and card games.
  • Clean glasses, utensils, and bar equipment. Clean bars, work areas, and tables.
  • Take beverage orders from serving staff or directly from patrons.
  • Serve wine, and bottled or draft beer. Mix ingredients, such as liquor, soda, water, sugar, and bitters, to prepare cocktails and other drinks.
  • Serve snacks or food items to customers seated at the bar. Run food to tables.
  • Stock bar with beer, wine, liquor, and related supplies such as ice, glassware, napkins, or straws.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Skills Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bilingual – Spanish & English speaking preferred.
  • TIPS or ServSafe Certified 
  • At least 6 months experience in restaurant bar service.
  • Punctuality, detail oriented nature, and time management skills are all important.

  • Strong ability to improvise, problem solve, and have good judgement.
